How Does LASIK Surgery Work?

LASIK is performed when the patient is under local anesthesia, distributed in the form of eye drops. At most, LASIK takes about 10 minutes to perform. It’s important to have someone drive you home after the operation.

During the actual surgery, the optometrist will use a laser, either called a microkeratome or femtosecond, to slice a thin flap in the cornea. This sensation is painless, and the cornea is then peeled back. The corneal tissue that is underneath is then reshaped using another laser. This reshaping allows for the eye to correctly focus light onto the retina. After the cornea is reshaped, the cornea flap is put back in place and the surgery is over.

Is LASIK Surgery Covered by Insurance?

Commonly, LASIK or other refractive/laser surgeries are not covered by insurance. However, your insurance company might pay for your procedure if you meet certain criteria. LASIK surgery is commonly marked as an “elective” procedure and not absolutely necessary. However, if you’re in need of LASIK surgery due to an eye injury, errors during a previous surgery, or being unable to wear glasses, your insurance company may be able to front the bill.
